As a South Jersey maternity photographer, one of my favorite things is creating portraits that preserve this incredible season before it passes far too quickly.
Pregnancy changes so quickly. One week your belly seems to have appeared overnight, and before you know it, you’re preparing to meet the little person you’ve been waiting for.
A maternity portrait session gives you the chance to preserve this part of your story in a way that feels beautiful, intentional and completely different from the everyday photographs on your phone.
For this South Jersey maternity photography session, we created a collection of portraits ranging from soft and ethereal to modern, glamorous and dramatic. The result is exactly what I love about maternity photography: there doesn’t have to be just one version of you.
You can be romantic and powerful. Elegant and sensual. A mother-to-be and still completely yourself.

A Maternity Photoshoot Designed Around You
One of the questions I hear most often from expectant mothers is, “What am I going to wear?”
The good news is that you don’t have to arrive knowing how to create photographs like these.
My maternity sessions are designed from the beginning around the client. We talk about the styles you’re drawn to, how you’d like to be photographed, what you’d like to reveal or keep covered, and the overall feeling you want your portraits to have.
For this session, we began with flowing white fabric against a bright studio background. The simplicity keeps all the attention on her shape, expression and beautiful pregnancy silhouette.
From there, we moved into a fitted white dress and included her husband for a completely different look.

Maternity Photos With Your Husband or Partner
Your maternity session doesn’t have to be only about individual portraits. Including your husband or partner creates images that tell another part of the story: the two of you just before your family changes forever.
For these portraits, we kept the wardrobe sophisticated and neutral. Her fitted white dress paired beautifully with his gray suit, creating a clean, timeless portrait that will still look beautiful displayed in their home years from now. We even included their little dog for a few portraits because family is family. 🤍
These are often some of my favorite photographs from a maternity photoshoot because they’re not simply pregnancy pictures. They’re family portraits taken at a moment that can never quite be recreated.

Modern, Editorial Maternity Portraits
Next, we changed the entire mood.
A simple fitted black dress against a gray background transformed the session into something much more editorial. Instead of elaborate sets or props, the focus remained on posing, expression, lighting and shape.
This is one reason I love studio maternity photography. Within one session, we can create dramatically different looks without the photographs ever feeling disconnected.
The black dress portraits feel polished and fashion-inspired, while the seated images with her husband have the presence of a classic editorial portrait.
And yes, you do not need to know how to pose.
Most of my clients aren’t models and don’t walk into the studio knowing what to do with their hands, where to look or which angle will photograph them best. I guide you through the entire process, down to the smallest adjustments.
That’s my job.

Dramatic Maternity Photography
Some of the simplest portraits from this session are also some of the most striking.
Using directional light against a dark background allowed us to create dramatic maternity silhouettes where the light traces the curves of her face and pregnant belly.
There is almost nothing competing for attention. Just light, shape and motherhood.
These images have a fine-art quality that feels very different from the brighter portraits earlier in the session, yet they belong beautifully in the same collection.
This variety is intentional.
When you’re investing in professional maternity photography, I want you to leave with more than several variations of the same photograph. I want you to have a collection.

Tasteful Maternity Boudoir Portraits
We also created more intimate maternity portraits celebrating her changing body.
Maternity boudoir doesn’t have to feel overly provocative. It can be soft, elegant and incredibly beautiful.
These portraits are always created according to each client’s comfort level.
Some women want to be completely covered. Others love sheer fabric, bodysuits or implied nude portraits. And some want to celebrate their pregnant body exactly as it is.
There isn’t a correct choice. Your maternity session should look and feel like you.
The reclining portrait and more intimate studio images from this session are beautiful examples of how pregnancy photography can celebrate the body without losing the timeless, sophisticated feeling of the overall gallery.

When Should You Schedule Your Maternity Photos?
For most clients, maternity portraits are photographed during the third trimester, when the belly is beautifully defined but you’re still comfortable enough to enjoy the session.
I recommend contacting me well before that point, however. Booking earlier gives us time to plan your wardrobe, discuss hair and makeup, design the session and reserve the best date for your pregnancy.
If you’re already further along, don’t assume you’ve missed your opportunity. Reach out and we’ll determine what dates may still work.
